We are now in our eighth year of publication. I can’t believe how the time has flown! Not only has this magazine grown by leaps and bounds, but also the colored pencil medium itself. I am constantly amazed by what you artists are able to accomplish!

We have some great things planned for the coming year, all in the hopes of helping you reach new heights as an artist. First, we have the brand new Workshop Series. We heard your feedback that you want more content for beginners, so we have invited some of the best art instructors around to give free tutorials including downloadable photo and line art, simple step-by-steps, and a manageable materials list. Amie Howard kicks off this series with her adorable dog portrait. We hope this will be a fun exercise to look forward to each month whether you’re a beginner or a pro. Be sure to share your finished work, too. Learn more at www.coloredpencilworkshop.com.

If you haven’t tried color shapers, Jennifer Lane is excited to present this technique she learned about from a friend. It’s really cool and economical! Sometimes it’s hard to finish a piece; sometimes it’s hard to know when it’s done. Q&A columnist Barb Sotiropoulos shares what she’s learned about both scenarios. Then the Art Gear Guide gives us the scoop on Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle pencils.

In What You Said, I love your advice about what new products you tried in 2017 and what pencils you like best on black paper. Follow us on Facebook to share your voice next time and to post your work each weekend for a chance to be featured in our gallery – www.facebook.com/coloredpencilmagazine. Equipped with what pencils work best, try out the brand new UART Dark Premium Sanded Paper sample included in each January 2018 print issue while supplies last. Don’t forget to share your work and feedback on the paper sample on our Facebook page!

You will never forget featured artist Marzieh Shojaee’s work after you see it. I instantly fell in love with her soul piercing portraits that not only perfectly portray the emotion of the subject but also evoked that emotion back at me. I am more than proud to start our year off with her amazing level of artistic talent!
