Blick’s ad this month says it all for the May issue – “Let Creativity Bloom,” beginning with Flowers with Textures by Joel Armstrong, who found a way during lockdown to preserve backyard memories. Continuing our floral theme, Melinda Edstein teaches you how to create a peachy Canna Lily. If you enjoyed that, follow along with our Book of the Month 10-step Drawing: Flowers by Mary Woodin, who shows you how to make a simple rose and then a grouping to create a beautiful wreath.
It’s spring cleaning time, and Many Peltier will give you her best tips to tackle your art space so everything is tidy and accessible. Next, Sara Austin shares how a dream inspired her to start working on wood with colored pencils and has given her a chance to be the artist she desires. It’s never too late, as our featured artist Seong Weon Ahn discovered when she began a second life as an artist after 40. It’s amazing how we think that we have to have everything figured out in our 20s, but we can always get started on a new passion no matter our age. Seong’s botanicals have a unique way of jumping off the paper with her perfect rendering of light and shadow over her leaves that I knew I had to share with you.
In the Spotlight this month, we have Cretacolor’s MegaColor colored pencils. These oversized pencils are perfect for covering large areas. Visit our giveaway page to enter to win a set to test them out!
Finally, we have our winners of the White to Bright Art Challenge, where we presented an all-white still life and asked you to get creative and add color to it. We were also happy to auction off the entire contents of the photo and give the proceeds x2 to the Crisis in Ukraine through the Samaritan’s Purse charity. If you’d like to donate, you can do so at: https://sampur.se/3J1Trqd.
Starting now, enter our Wild Cat Art Challenge to win some of the $1,300+ prizes sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama and judged by France Bauduin. (Psst – look for an article on rendering fur by France next month!) Enter by 8/1/22 at www.coloredpencilmag.com/challenge to view the complete rules and more.
Last, we have a new Charming Colt Grizaye Drawing Kit available at www.grizaye.com. I am so excited about this one and know you will have hours of fun with great results that will impress your friends, family, and yourself. I rarely draw and was pretty proud of how mine came out. We’d love to have you share your WIP or finished piece on our Grizaye Facebook group or our new Instagram page – @grizayeart.
Thank you all again for keeping us going and for your support. Sign up for our Newsletter and we will send you a free digital issue at www.coloredpencilmag.com/signup.
All the best to you and yours!
